Sträusbaügh Guitar and Music Academy

SGMA is a school for passionate, serious guitarists—especially those who feel overwhelmed by infinite videos and inflated promises, and constantly underwhelmed by actual quality. A school for those ready to move from one-dimensional guitar player to three-dimensional guitar-playing musician.

You’ll be guided directly by me, Mike Strausbaugh—a lifelong teacher, composer, performer, and mentor. I don’t just teach music. I create and shape musicians.

SGMA is my legacy. Built from everything I’ve lived through—everything I’ve learned, lost, fought for, and reclaimed.

So whether you’re just beginning or rebuilding, whether you’re lost in a sea of YouTube hacks or finally ready to stop drifting—this is your anchor.

ABOUT MIKE

Greetings and salutations!
I’m Mike Strausbaugh—guitarist, composer, teacher, speaker. Owner of a very fancy résumé.

But I’m still just an 80s metal kid whose life was saved by Music in 1987—who somehow lived long enough to lose it all at 24 and fight to get it back more than a decade later.

I was on my own at 15—the youngest casualty in a family that had fallen apart.
I was invisible, powerless, and scared.
Forgotten.

And then my life changed in an instant—one day in 10th grade English class, when a kid pressed play on a white cassette tape.

Disposable Heroes.
Metallica.

That song doesn’t begin—it detonates. And it sounded exactly like I felt.

Grief. Rage. Silence. And suddenly, I had a voice.

As soon as I could, I bought my first guitar. It became my sword, my shield, my armor, my home.

I built my life around that guitar, and then around Music.

Nine years later, I graduated with my B.A. in classical guitar.
And exactly one week after that, my life began to fall apart.

Over the next 10 years, an undiagnosed genetic disorder took everything—my health, my future, my music. A decade of survival. Eight near-death experiences. Chronic illness. Constant pain. Spiritual existentialism. No guitar. No music.

And then I was diagnosed.
Common Variable Immunodeficiency. I had a brand new life.
The doctor asked what I was going to do with it.

Five years later, I had reconnected with music and relearned how to play the guitar—while earning three master’s degrees in music, working full-time, commuting 100 miles a day, going through a horrible divorce, and homelessness.

TEDx

My TED Talk tells that story—but it’s not just about illness or resilience.
It’s about what lives on the other side, if you’re willing to fight for it.

Music and the Guitar have saved, defined, and shaped every part of me—even when they were gone. Even when I was gone.

Now they’re the soul of everything I do—especially Strausbaugh Guitar and Music Academy, my private school for passionate musicians searching for the Way, even if they don’t know what it is yet.

And it’s why I speak and perform—in classrooms, conferences, and on keynote stages.

To share not just the music, but the meaning.

This isn’t just about guitar.
It’s about being alive.

Student Success Stories

Josh H.

For those trying to get an understanding of what it is like to have Mike as your music mentor, please STOP & READ this review!

My name is Josh, and I am a multi-instrumentalist. When I was looking for a guitar teacher, I really wanted someone who was going to educate me on music theory. A person who could inform me on why certain chords blend well together, how I can play with more intent over chords, and what steps to take to understand the relationship between music across not only the fretboard but all instruments. Instead of playing on “feel”, I wanted the ability to feel confident in my play by understanding the relationship between notes and chords.

First and foremost, I myself do not look at Mike as a “teacher”, but in a lot of ways more of a mentor/friend. This is a guy who will match your level of passion for music and educate you on how you can progress as a guitar player. I approached Mike informing him of what I was looking for in a teacher, and Instantly became aware of how knowledgeable he is in the world of music.

At the end of the day, if you want a mentor in your life that will be able to take you through the journey of music, assist you with your personal music aspire.

Gary C.

After giving up on the guitar 35 years ago I made a decision to give it one more go. I contacted Mike to inquire about lessons before I even decided to buy a guitar since I gave mine away.

His conversation encouraged me to go ahead and take the plunge. That was in October of 2020. Since then it has been one hell of a roller coaster ride with Mike.

He’s a coach (trust me he has all the tools and credentials to qualify as a guitar teacher) Performance psychologist, And a no nonsense musician and guitar mentor.

Walter K.

I have been taking lessons for about a year now from Mike, he is an absolutely exceptional teacher.

If you’re looking for a first class guitar teacher, look no further! Our lessons are packed full of theory, history, great conversations and everything you will ever need to be able to truly speak the language of music.

I could not be more happy with what I have learned from Mike so far. He’s a guy who will cut the bullshit and make the music experience fun, Mike is your guy!
